You never really leave the place where you were born. The fabric of the universe bends to let you in and no matter where you go, there is a crease in time and space that can take your soul back to that place in an instant. We moved to the mainland from the island when I was small, and I don’t remember the old house or the land. My parents, older sisters, and aunties all did what they could to keep the culture alive for me. We celebrated the holidays, ate the food, did the dances. But as I grew, I took on the shape of the new world.
On the eve of my sister’s graduation, as we sat making leis to wear for the celebration, I found the crease in time and space that took me back to the island. Stringing the plumeria flowers together, I was taken back by the intoxicating aroma. The sweet, delicate, white flowers were gentle and powerful. My auntie smiled as I paused and took a deep breath of flowers.
Plumeria is an assertive floral fragrance that evokes tropical island life. An opulent complement of berry, jasmine, carnation, rose, and gardenia round out the sweet aroma.
